BRBS Workshop January 2016: About Apiary Inspectors

We would like to give a special thanks to NC State Bee Inspector Mr. Greg Fariss for being our guest speaker at our workshop this past Saturday and everybody who attended! We had a really good turn out and received a lot of useful information about what to expect from Mr. Fariss as our inspector.

Beware all beekeepers!! The inspector is coming!! Run!! Hide your bees!! All too often the bee inspectors are spoken of as harbingers of doom and gloom. “Ain’t no inspector touchin’ my bees!” is a common retort at the very mention of them. So… for our January 2nd Workshop, Inspector Greg Farris was on hand to set the record straight, and educate us on what to expect during an inspection and dispel common misconceptions concerning his very important contributions to the beekeeping community at large.

BRBS Workshop December 2015: Essential Oils in Hive

BRBS would like to extend a sincere thank you to Mr Eugene Brown for donating his time and knowledge, being the guest speaker at December’s BRBS Practical Beekeeping Workshop, this past Saturday. Mr Brown is a long time beekeeper, involved in numerous clubs and beekeeping associations, and shared a wealth of knowledge about essential oil application as it pertains to honey bees. It was a very informative presentation on an intricate and complicated subject matter. We would also like to thank all who attended, and we hope you learned as much as we did. Thanks again and happy Beekeeping!

BRBS Workshop November 2015: Top Bar Beekeeping & Overwintering Hives

BRBS’s 2nd Practical Beekeeping Workshop was held on November 7th. And once again, the weather is prevented us from getting into our hives. However, Ms Elise Clark educated us on top bar hive beekeeping practices, and Mr Carroll Hill, our own mentor, went over the proper over-wintering techniques. Both Mr Hill and Ms Clark are veteran beekeepers and we were very fortunate to have them.

BRBS would like to thank Ms Clarke and Mr Hill, as well as everyone who attended our Practical Beekeeping Workshop today. Its a real privilege to be able to host these workshops and hopefully they will have a positive impact on our local beekeeping community. Thanks again, and we hope to see you at the December workshop.

BRBS Workshop October 2015: Our First Workshop!

Our first Basic Beekeeping Workshop at BRBS was October 3rd. It was held at the store from 1:00 pm until 3:00. It consisted of a VERY brief rundown of honey bee history, beekeepers tools, basic hive components, and a review of the beekeepers calendar. We had hoped to do some basic hive inspections outside but weather didn’t cooperate.

We would like to extend a big “Thank You” to everybody who came to our first Basic Beekeeping Workshop today. Although we were unable to inspect hives we were excited to present our new observation hive. We consider it a big success, and it was a privilege to interact with our current and prospective fellow beekeepers. We look forward to seeing yall at our next workshop on November 7th! Thanks a million!
